How it heats

A reversing valve switches the direction of the refrigerant, so the outdoor unit pulls heat from outside air and the indoor coil releases it into the house.

Mild days, cold snaps

Chattanooga winters are usually mild, but a few days each year stay below freezing. On those days backup heat strips or a gas furnace help the heat pump keep up.

Defrost is normal

On cold, damp mornings the outdoor coil frosts over. The system briefly switches to defrost, and you may see steam rising from the unit. That's expected.

Auxiliary and emergency heat

"Aux" on the thermostat means backup heat is helping. "Emergency heat" runs backup heat only and should be used when the heat pump itself has failed.

Signs of trouble

Ice that doesn't clear, cool air in heat mode for long periods, loud banging during defrost or a unit that won't switch modes.

Dual-fuel systems

Some homes pair a heat pump with a gas furnace that takes over on the coldest days. The thermostat must be set up correctly for this.

Upkeep

Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and snow, change filters and book a yearly check.

Get help

Tell the technician how it behaves in heat and cool modes. Send a request and an AC company will get in touch.

Outdoor clearance

Keep at least two feet clear around the outdoor unit and nothing stored on top.

Replacing a heat pump

A new heat pump should be matched to the indoor coil and air handler and sized for the house, not just the old unit's label.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my heat pump blow lukewarm air?
Heat pump air is usually around body temperature, which can feel cool on your hand even when it's heating properly. If rooms won't warm up, have it checked.
Is a heat pump enough for a Chattanooga winter?
For most homes, yes, with backup heat for the few coldest days.
