Check the settings
The thermostat should read Cool, with the setpoint below the room temperature and the fan on Auto. A blank or flickering screen often just needs new batteries. Wait several minutes after any change, because many systems have a built-in delay before restarting.
Power to both units
There are usually two breakers, one for the outdoor condenser and one for the indoor air handler or furnace, plus a disconnect box beside the outdoor unit. If a breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and book a repair.
Look at the filter
A clogged filter cuts airflow so badly that the indoor coil can freeze. Then the house barely cools no matter how long the system runs. Replace it and give the coil time to thaw.
Frozen lines
Ice on the copper line at the outdoor unit or on the indoor coil means turn cooling off and run the fan only for a few hours. If it freezes again with a clean filter, there's likely a refrigerant or airflow fault.
Leaks and float switches
On humid days the coil pulls a lot of water from the air. A blocked condensate line can fill the pan and trip a float switch, which shuts the AC off to protect your floors and ceilings.
Noises and smells
Buzzing without the fan turning, clicking, grinding or a burning smell all need a technician. Common culprits are capacitors, contactors and fan motors, which work hardest in peak heat.
Systems in crawl spaces
Many Chattanooga homes have the air handler or ducts in a crawl space. Water, pests or a disconnected duct down there can cause poor cooling that you can't see from inside the house.
Help the diagnosis
Note the system's age, what it's doing, when it started and anything you've checked. Send a request and an AC company will get in touch.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does my AC run constantly on hot afternoons?
- On days in the mid-90s an older or undersized system may run nonstop and still lag a few degrees. If it never catches up, even overnight, have it checked for low refrigerant, dirty coils or duct leaks.
- Is it safe to keep resetting the breaker?
- No. One reset is fine, but a breaker that trips again is protecting the equipment from an electrical problem.
