Signal Mountain at a glance
Signal Mountain is a town of 8,852 people (2020) on Walden Ridge, above Chattanooga. The name is also used loosely for the part of the ridge near the town.
What that means for your AC
Up on the ridge, summer nights are often a little cooler and breezier than in the valley, while winter brings more chance of frost and the occasional icy road. Many homes use heat pumps backed by gas or electric heat; see heat pumps.
Wooded lots
Heavy tree cover shades homes but drops leaves and twigs into outdoor units. Clear the top and sides of the unit in fall and after storms.
Signal Point and the streetcar
Long before the town existed, Native Americans used Signal Point to send fire and smoke signals across the Tennessee Valley, and the Union Army used it as a communications station in the Civil War. After epidemics struck Chattanooga in 1873 and 1878, families moved up the mountain for clean air and pure water. In the early 1900s Charles E. James bought 4,400 acres and developed the area, and a 12-mile streetcar line linked it to the city by 1913. Some homes date from those early decades and have been updated many times, so it pays to have both the equipment and the ducts looked at together.
