AC Not Cooling? Checks for Chattanooga Homes
A few minutes of checking can solve simple AC problems and gives the technician useful clues for the rest.
Request an AC technicianSettings
Cool mode, setpoint below the room, fan on Auto. Replace weak batteries and wait several minutes after changes.
Breakers and disconnect
Check both breakers and the outdoor disconnect. Reset a trip once only.
Filter
A clogged filter can freeze the coil and leave you with almost no cooling.
Ice
Icy lines mean switch cooling off and run the fan alone to thaw before trying again.
Water
A full drain pan may have tripped the float switch.
Outdoor fan
With cooling on, the outdoor fan should spin. Humming without spinning needs a technician.
Crawl space
If the air handler is under the house, look for water or a disconnected duct with a flashlight, without crawling in if it isn't safe.
Book the repair
See AC repair.
Keep notes
Write down what you checked, the time and what the system did. On a busy summer day, that list can shorten the visit.
Stay safe
Don't open electrical panels on the outdoor unit or handle refrigerant lines. Leave those to the technician.
When it's simply too hot
On the hottest afternoons an older system may run all day and still sit a few degrees above the setting. If it catches up after sunset, it may just be at its limit; if it never catches up, something needs fixing.
